Consul General's Commendation for Tohoku Outreach Efforts

Written by JMSA on . Posted in Announcements

On June 7th, 2017, the 9/11 Tribute Center received the Consul General’s Commendation from Ambassador Reiichiro Takahashi, the Consul General of Japan in New York, for its ongoing 9/11 to 3/11 Tohoku outreach efforts with JMSA.

JMSA has been the core organizer of the 9/11 to 3/11 Tohoku outreach project and it has been generously supported by American Airlines, Arnhold Institute for Global Health at Mount Sinai, Japan Society, Rotary International, and the United States-Japan Foundation.

We will be leading our sixth 9/11 to 3/11 Tohoku outreach mission next month, from July 2nd to July 8th, 2017. Although it has now been more than six years since the 3/11 Japan Earthquake, an estimated 123,000 evacuees continue to suffer the consequences of this devastating event. Children and school communities, in particular, have been especially vulnerable. This year, we wish to empower these school communities by showing concrete examples of resilience and promoting self-motivation toward recovery. Please read more about our outreach mission and planned events below.

The second annual JMSA NY Life Science Forum was held at NYU Langone Medical Center on 4/9/2016. With more than 225 participants, the event was a huge success and was well received. There were 14 oral presentations given on various topics in health science including basic science, translational research, public health and policy making.  At times lectures were broadcasted to a satellite location to accommodate participants who could not find seats in the main lecture hall. A DJ (DJ GO who volunteered his service) provided music throughout the event as additional entertainment.  In addition to the lectures, there were 23 poster presentations. Four scientists were selected for awards for Best Poster. The two second place awards, a $100 coupon towards flights to Japan, were given to Dr. Koki Nakanishi (Columbia University) and Yorito Hattori (Weill Cornell Medical College). The two first place awards consisted of a free invitation to JMSA’s Annual dinner (a $300 value), went to Dr. Tomoyoshi Nakadai (The Rockefeller University) and Dr. Shoichiro Takeishi (Albert Einstein College of Medicine)、
