JMSA Shadowing Program Report 1
Message from Christina Theodorou:
Through the JMSA Shadowing Program, I was able to shadow Dr. Erich Anderer [JMSA mentor], a Japanese-American neurosurgeon practicing at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. I watched as he performed an laminectomy on one of his patients, and got a chance to see a spinal cord for the first time (aside from my anatomy cadaver!). As a student at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine, I haven't had the chance to rotate through a community hospital and it was very interesting to talk with Dr. Anderer about the differences between large academic centers and community hospitals. Through the JMSA Shadowing Program, I was able to spend a day one-on-one with an attending surgeon, in a field I may not have had the chance to explore otherwise. It was a wonderful experience and I recommend it to anyone interested in the field of medicine, at any level of training.
