2017 JMSA Scholarship Recipients

The JMSA honors students in the medical professions who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to the values of the Japanese Medical Society of America.  Scholarship awards are presented at the JMSA Annual Spring Dinner each year.

Here are the students who received scholarships this year and their proposed projects.

Honjo-JMSA Scholarship

Dan Ebner (Brown University School of Medicine)- A carbon-ion radiotherapy study at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) in Chiba, Japan

Shoko Mori (SUNY Downstate College of Medicine)- JMSA Journal Club for Japanese students, researchers, residents, and physicians to come together

Yoshiko Toyoda (Weill Cornell Medical College)- Create a JMSA Women in Health Sciences group

 

Kuro Murase MD-JMSA Scholarship

Takuto Takahashi, MD (Pediatric Resident at SUNY Downstate)- Develop mentorship for pediatric trainees to advance post-graduate training in Japan

Takeshi Uemura, MD (Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Fellow at Mount Sinai)- Enhance communication between doctors and seriously ill patients

 

Mitsui USA-JMSA Scholarship

Halley Kaye-Kauderer (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai)- Study the resilient behaviors and post-traumatic growth of Fukushima medical students

Kenny Nakazawa (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai)- Organize JMSA career panel as guidance for prospective student members

Mika Tabata (Stanford University School of Medicine)- Initiate discussion and exchange of knowledge between the US and Japan related to early examination of skin cancer

 

Nippon Life-JMSA Scholarship

Risa Hoshino, MD (Pediatric/Genetics Resident at Mount Sinai)- Introduce the US approach to medical genetics through pediatric resident exchange program with Jikei University

Jake Levine (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai)- Assess how disaster experience shaped medical students’ desire to become physicians in Fukushima

 

Nishioka-JMSA Scholarship

Kirsten Ellye Homma (George Washington University School of Medicine)- Start JMSA Life Science Forum Kids in Washington D.C. to promote scientific curiosity among children

Riku Moriguchi (Albert Einstein College of Medicine)- Introduce the multifaceted nature of medicine to Japanese high school students

Mihoko Tanabe (Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine)- Develop workshops on the Japanese medical system for medical student colleagues at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

 

Raymond Sekiguchi MD-JMSA Scholarship

Keiichi Ito, PhD (Rockefeller University)- Promote exchange among Japanese scientists through JMSA New York Life Science Forum

Fumihiro Ogawa, MD PhD (Postdoctoral Fellow at Weill Cornell)- Increase children’s interest in science through JMSA Life Science Forum for Kids

 

Toyota-JMSA Scholarship

Kenji Fujitani, MD (Resident Physician at Stony Brook University Hospital)- Guiding JMSA shadowing program and the mentorship/advising program

Ichiro Watanabe, MD (Simulation Research Fellow at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia)- Analyze the differences in patients’ characteristics of percutaneous coronary intervation between US and Japan
