On March 6, 2025, Ambassador Mikio Mori of the Consulate General of Japan presented Dr. Shunichi Homma, Professor of Medicine, Columbia University, with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. He was first presented with this award in the 2024 Autumn Conferment of Decoration in Tokyo.
Dr. Homma is recognized for his remarkable impact on Japan-US relations and the Japanese and Japanese American community, especially with the next generation of medical leaders and in bridging our two nations in the field of medicine. His landmark contributions include leadership in medical and humanitarian exchanges, advancing bilateral and global collaborations, and his involvement with numerous boards and organizations in Japan and the U.S., such as JAMSNET, the Japan History Council of NY, and JMSA. Dr. Homma is the President of the NY Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Society as well as the Digital Museum of the History of Japanese in NY. Dr. Homma was the President of JMSA from 2004 to 2008 and will be remembered for transforming JMSA from a social organization for physicians to an outfacing organization whose main mission is for healthcare providers to provide support and wellness to the community in the US and in Japan.
